About Warrington Youth Baseball

Warrington Youth Baseball (WYB) is a locally run, non-government charity organization affiliated with the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth baseball youth organization. Our board members and volunteers are just like you- people who want to make a difference in our community by helping our youth learn the fundamentals of baseball and good sportsmanship, both on and off the field.

We provide opportunities for players, within our Cal Ripken Boundaries, the ability to learn the game of baseball, and have a safe and fun baseball experience. In addition, to the in-house programs outlined below, WYB has travel teams which begin at age 7 and run through age 12 that play in the Suburban Travel Baseball League.

Instructional Baseball (for ages 4-8)
At this level, the player is taught the basics of baseball – how to throw, catch, hit, run – and the rules. This bracket is made up of 4 divisions – Quick Ball (4 & 5 year olds), Coach Pitch (5 & 6 year olds), and Machine Pitch/Low Minors (a 7 year old division and an 8 year old division). The emphasis at these age levels is to have fun while learning the game with your friends.  The 8 year old in-house league team selection is on a draft- to make the teams balanced, friend requests may not be honored. Travel baseball starts at 7-8 years old for those that want to play baseball at an even more competitive pace.

Minor League Baseball (for ages 9-10)
The Minors are a preparatory bracket for players to learn some of the finer points of the game and begin to play to win. Limited base stealing, player pitching and a slightly higher level of competition. Teams are formed via a draft- friend requests may not be honored.  Travel baseball is offered for all players in this bracket. The travel program is on a try-out basis. While wins and losses are recorded, players are encouraged to try new positions and the batting lineup is usually random.  Every team qualifies for the playoffs.  You must play in-house to be on a travel team.

Major League Baseball (for ages 11-12)
The Majors is one of the highest levels of play for youth baseball. Games are more competitive and players typically focus on their best position, but it is still an instructional setting and we encourage players to try new positions.  We will play for a league championship and get into some advanced level skills. At the Major Division level all teams play on a field that has a 50′ pitching mound distance and 70′ base paths. Travel ball is offered at this level with tryouts in the winter. You must play in-house to be on a travel team.

Warrington Baseball’s Connie Mack and American Legion program provides further opportunities for players ages 13-18 while Warrington Warwick Softball Organization provides softball for girls ages 5-17. FAQ

Q:  What is the difference between Warrington Youth Baseball (Cal Ripken), and Little League (Warwick or Lenape Valley)?
A:  At one point years ago (2006), Warrington and Warrick were one baseball organization.  However, due to the charter rules of Little League Baseball, our organization had too many players and needed to be split, and the decision was made for Warrington to join the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth League, while Warwick chose to continue with Little League.  Since Little League and Cal Ripken are separate organizations, the boundaries between Warwick, Lenape Valley, and Warrington technically overlap.  There is an agreement between the organizations, however, not to recruit in each others boundaries.  However, flexibility is provided for players/families to join the organization they choose based on the boundaries.

Q:  OK, what is the difference between Little League and Cal Ripken?
A:  For most age groups, the difference is very minor if not technical.  Both organizations stress fair play, good sportsmanship, and have a focus on player safety.  However, in the older age groups, age 11 and 12, the differences are very material.  In this age group, Cal Ripken plays on a larger infield (70 foot bases and 50 foot pitching distance vs. 60 and 46 feet respectively in Little League).  As a result, it is comparable to real baseball, and leading and stealing are allowed (there are no leads allowed in Little League), and scoring from second base on an outfield hit is a usual occurrence.  Since the bases are farther apart, it also puts a premium on both running and fielding, and many feel this design more accurately represents playing baseball at the junior high, high school, college, and even MLB level.  In addition, it makes an easier transition to the 90 foot basebaths once players turn 13.

Q:  Who runs Warrington Youth Baseball?  How does the government of Warrington Township help out?
A:  Warrington Youth Baseball (WYB) is the nonprofit organization that runs the ‘day-to-day’ activities of running a youth baseball organization- this includes organizing the teams and schedule, hiring the umpires, providing the lime and spray paint for the foul lines, and running the snackstand.  The board of directors are all parents of players and voluntarily contribute their time and expertise to help run the organization.  Like many other nonprofits, WYB is run like a business.  We have budgets, revenue, expenses, and make decisions that help build and grow the organization.  Our relationship with Warrington Township is solid- Barness and Kings Park are township owned facilities which WYB uses through a land-use permit process.  The township is responsible for the upkeep of the general facilities, including the parking lot, paths, trashcans, and common ground outside the baseball fences.  WYB, however, is responsible for all ground work of the fields and upkeep- this includes cutting the grass, fertilizer treatments, and ground repair and maintenance.  These costs are well over $50,000/year and are funded by WYB- no tax dollars are used.

Q:  I would like to help or become a coach.  How do I do that?
A:  When you register your child for either our Spring or Fall baseball leagues, there is an option for the parent(s) to volunteer as a coach or assistant coach.  All volunteers are subject to a background check conducted by WYB.   If you are new to WYB, then we encourage you to let us know your desire to help out by sending an email to [email protected].

Q:  Do you need help more than coaches?
A:  YES!  WYB is always looking for volunteers to help us promote and grow the organization.  There are many board positions available and volunteering is easy and the time commitment low.  Not only will you be helping the organization, you will also be providing a role model for your children in the value and benefits of community service.  Board meetings are typically held during the 3rd week of each month at Barness Park.  No matter your skills, what is more important is commitment and a desire to help out.  If you are interested in joining the board or volunteering in some other capacity, simply send an email to [email protected].
